My kids already know they aren’t allowed to get a phone until they can cook a few of life’s basics recipes. Spaghetti sauce is one of them!

cook Time: 20 minutes | Serves 6

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 pound spaghetti

  • 1 tbsp olive oil

  • 1/2 yellow onion, diced

  • 3 cloves garlic, minced

  • 1 28 oz can crushed tomatoes

  • 1 tsp sugar

  • 1-3 grinds pepper

  • 1 pat butter, to swirl at end

  • Toppings: parmesan cheese (shave with vegetable peeler or citrus zester), basil leaves

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Cook spaghetti to al dente.

  2. In large saucepan, heat oil and add onion. Cook until translucent, about 5 minutes. Add garlic and cook a minute more. Add the tomatoes and season with salt, pepper, and sugar. Simmer this for about 15 minutes, longer if you have time. You can simmer the sauce up to an hour. Taste and add more salt, pepper, or sugar as needed.

  3. When you are ready to serve, swirl in the pat of butter. Add pasta to sauce and toss to coat. Serve with cheese and basil leaves.
